From Thursday the 7th of July until Sunday 10th of July the international squash youth is gathering in Amsterdam for the 34th edition of the Dutch Junior Open, the prestigious tournament for youth in the age of 8 to 19 years. In the morning on opening day most of the girls under 11 and boys under 13 & 15 had the honour to start of the Dutch Junior Open.
In the boys under 15 category a qualification had to be played in order to fill in the final spots in the draw. The young Americans Cullen Smith [65/76] and Pablo Necco [65/74] were in their zone this morning against Ori Geva (ISR, 33/64) and Ahmed Abdel Kawy (EGY, 33/64) by beating them in respectively three and four games. Ammar Abdel Latif [65/76] won in three games from the French Enzo Huet [33/64] and is now qualified for the main draw and will face number 1 seeded Maddox Moxham from Belgium.
Within the Girls under 11 category a top match was scheduled between the number 2 seeded Naomi Wiegenfeld from Israel against Emilie Leblond [3/4] from France. The girls under 11 play a round robin to decide who will crown herself to the champion of the tournament. Wiegenfeld was on fire and won in three games with only 14 counter points and tops the table after the first round played.
The first match that has been played in five games is the match between Malek Ahmed [9/16] from Egypt and Jules Rauch [17/29] from France. The two players played an exciting match in front of the crowd on court two. Rauch took the first game in 12-14. After Ahmed came back to 1-1 in games, Rauch took the lead again. Ahmed was on fire in fourth and played full energy in the fifth game, Rauch did everything he could but couldn’t prevent the 11-9 win of Ahmed who proceeds in the main draw.
