Round-up day 1 at the Dutch Junior Open

From Thursday the 7th of July until Sunday 10th of July the international squash youth is gathering in Amsterdam for the 34th edition of the Dutch Junior Open, the prestigious tournament for youth in the age of 8 to 19 years. At the end of day one there are some interesting results in all the categories.

In the category boys under 13 The Indian Agasta Bansal [9/16] took care of one of the first upsets in the tournament by winning his match against the Polish Mateusz Lohmann [5/8] in five equal games. Ali Khalil [9/16] representing England surprised the crowd as well by winning in three games from Dominik Forgac [CZE, 5/8]. Number one seeded Arja Saha from the United States of America didn’t make any mistakes in his second round against David Focsanschi from Romania [9/16] and now faces fellow American Juda Cha [5/8].

While most of the girls in the under 15 category won as expected, the big surprise came from the Ukrainian Anastasiia Krykun. The 17/32 seeded youngster won in five tense games from the Bulgarian Zhileva [5/8]. Whilst Krykun surprised in the under 15 category, Charlotte Pastel (USA, 33/59) had a massive performance on court 18 against American Ashna Tumuluri [9/16]. Pastel was able to get Tumuluri on her knees in five games that took over 80 minutes.

Tomorrow in some of the draws the top of the playing field will join the competition, resulting in a total of 369 matches. All match results can be found via this link.
